How can I find weight percent of alumina in composite coating?

2006

Dear sir,
I am doing composite coating(Ni+Al2O3) on mild steel substrate. How can I find weight percent of Al2O3 deposit in Ni-Al2O3 composite coating on mild steel. I am using Ni as an anode and Watts solution as an electrolyte.

Thanking you,
regards,

Sushanta,

The extent of incorporation of Al2O3 particles in the ED Ni matrix could be determined by a variety of methods.

One simple method - Dissolve a known weight of the Ed Ni-Al2O3 composite coating in nitric acid and then filter the Al2O3 particles through a weighed 0.1 micron membrane. From this, the percentage weight of Al2O3 particles incorporated in the ED Ni matrix could be estimated.

The level of incorporation could also be determined by the following methods:
1. Electron microprobe analyser (EPMA),
2. Cross-section of the coating using image analysis
3. Plasma emitting spectrum analyzer
4. Particle counting by observation of the coating surface morphology
5. Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy
