Making steel look like old dutch silver

I'm a furniture designer. went to meet a welder today who showed me a nice finish he uses on steel pieces that gives it an almost sandblasted/finely pocked and then slightly burnished silver/pewter look. He won't tell me his secret but claims he does it himself and it's very simple. This guy works out of his garage so I have the feeling he's not doing any complicated multi step process. he said it took him a year to figure it out.

please advise,

I doubt that the welder visits this site, and even if he does, I don't think he'll reveal in public what he won't reveal in private, and that took him a year to perfect.

Please send a photo because I don't understand exactly what you are describing.

I don't have access to taking a photo of this finish. The guy who has it would find that a bit suspect especially in that I am not using him on my project.
He's too expensive.
What about this; if one sandblasts stainless, is there any kind of treatment or burnish you can give it to add a bit of a luster to the higher part?
Is there anything I can rub into it and polish off that you know of?
Looking for anything interesting at this point.

Open to anyone's suggestions-

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
