Burnt Coppper-Bottomed Pot - Dangerous Fumes?

My favorite copper-bottomed (RevereWare) pot got so badly scorched that the copper finish has mostly flaked off. Can I still use the pot, or would heating it release any fumes which would be dangerous to my family? I only want to steam veggies, so I don't especially care if it heats perfectly uniformly. RevereWare company, OF COURSE, said I shouldn't continue using it, but gave no technical reason. Any chemists, etc., out there who really know? Thanks.

I have RevereWare too and some of it was overheated and has blisters in the copper. But I wouldn't think twice. I'm confident that it's harmless.
