EP Lacquer in Satin gold finish without using the satin nickel process

hi,
a customer here has a very interesting query, he has been doing satin gold finish in Electrophoretic lacquer also called dull gold (i.e., nickel+satin nickel + EPL in golden dye) but because of constant problems in the satin nickel tank + high pricing;he wants to try & avoid the satin ni process. My Question is, can we get the same finish by giving a Semi nickel finish (non glossy nickel) on the base metal & directly apply Matte EP lacquer on the brass or zinc product.
Please suggest.
