HARD CHROMING vs THERMAL SPRAY

Can Hard chroming be used for resurfacing bearing areas, which has to withstand high thermal stresses and dynamic loads. Also can hard chroming be used where thermal spray was used earlier.

It seems that you have a dimensional restoration situation, so you are probably thinking of thick coatings (over 0.05mm). Thermal stress and dynamic loads are not compatible with thick hard chrome as it has a very low thermal expansion coefficient and almost zero ductility. It also produces hydrogen embrittlement to high strength steels. Nickel sulfamate plating is much better and its properties similar to steel. Thermosprayed metals and alloys by modern processes, such as HVOF, also show very interesting and useful properties.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
