AMS 2412 copper undercoat

2005

I am a plater and I have this question.

In AMS2412 3.2.1 says " Silver shall be plated over a preliminary plating of copper of .0005 inch maximum. The copper strike may be omitted in plating copper and copper alloys, except for copper alloys containing zinc in quantities of 30% or more by weight. A nickel flash shall be used before the copper strike when plating corrosive corrosive-resistant steel.

My question is " copper strike " in the above statement- does it mean the plating should be done in a strike bath or could it be done in a strike as well as copper plating bath.
Or does it mean it does not matter as long the plating is less than .0005 max. Please help.

The ASTM guide on electroplating terminology might be something you should reference in interpreting this use of the term "strike." In general, strikes are much, much less than 1/2 mil in thickness. Activating stainless with a nickel strike is indeed a strike, however, 1/2 mil of copper to be used as a diffusion barrier is an underplate.
