Chlorine attacking nickel and chrome plating

(1999)

Is chlorine harmful to nickel and chrome plated surfaces? I have experienced "rusting" of nickel plated parts. Other than problems with the plating, are chemicals possibly the problem? I suspect chlorine may be used on these parts for cleaning. Thanks,

Hi Larry ,

I suspect that you have just sent the parts out to be Nickel / Chrome plated without discussing with your plater the end use of your product , call him discuss with him the usage to which the parts are put , and the environment in which they will live and leave it up to him to recommend a finish . However , if you want extra protection then demand a "Duplex" nickel coat specified as follows first nickel layer to be of "Sulfur free" Nickel and have a thickness of not less than 25 microns ( 1 thou ) followed by a minimum of 12.5 microns ( 0.5 Thou ) of fully bright nickel & a coat of microdiscontinuous chromium ( or Microcracked ) of 20 millionths of an inch . That should suit most environments as it is what is supposed to be on most steel auto parts

Best regards
