Best Clear Coat to patch a small spot on car?

2005

Hi,
I have a 1995 Volvo 850 with about a 2 inch by 5 inch spot on the hood where the clear coat is missing. It just seems to flake off around the edges of the spot. We didn't notice it before we brought it in for service at a place that we've been using for repairs for 15 years. He insists that he has no solvent that would have done that - he said the reason we didn't notice it is that we had about 5 days of rain prior to bringing it in and it doesn't show up in the rain. The short of it is he says he's not responsible.
My question is I've seen several companies advertising several different types of clear coat aerosol sprays. Which one would be best for my car. Thanks in advance for your help.

You will probably have to re-do the entire hood(paint and clear coat) and have the rest of the car buffed to match the new paint. If you just want to spray some clear on the spot, pick a can and go for it. I doubt the shop had anything to do with it, start paying attention to other cars built within the same time frame and you'll see a lot of the same issues with the paint job.

I have a 1998 Volvo XC with a patch of clear coat on the roof that has peeled off. This car has given me so many mechanical problems, I don't need to add to the bills by having he entire roof redone, so I'm going to get a can and fill in the missing clear coat.
