Removal/coating of oxide layer after heat-treatment

Curious.... In our process we have to heat 439 stainless Steel to about 650 deg C which turns the surface color to purple. Is there any way to remove it. Also do you know if it will change the metallurgical properties of SS adversely. Once the item is at the customer, the SS will be continuously operating at about 450 deg C!

There are mechanical and chemical ways to remove this oxide layer. The metallurgical properties are only affected on high strength steels over 38-40Rc by hydrogen embritllement caused by the use of a chemical method. Mechanical methods do not affect them appreciably or at all.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
