Help! I messed up my dark (oxidized) finish on silverplate teapot

I received a beautiful tea set that was dark and etched with flowers. The person I got it from told me it was just tarnished. So I heartily attached the cream pitcher with every silver cleaner I could find. When it didn't clean up as well as I thought it should, I went on line and discovered I have a set with the original "black opal" oxidized finish - not tarnished. But now I have messed up the creamer so it doesn't match (it is a "nice" dull gray now - yuk!). What can I do to turn it back?

Bleach, standard household bleach [adv: bleach/sodium hypochlorite in bulk on eBay or Amazon] will blacken the heck out of silver. Soak it for awhile and go over it with a clear finish afterwards.
