How to remove the balance of brass plating

2005

I purchased an expensive vintage handbag and the brass plating on the handle has worn to the base metal. The problem is that the fittings brass plating is intact giving a two-tone rather tacky appearance.
Is there a product or process whereby the fittings can be stripped? I feel to replate the handle would only eventually result in my current problem.
Thank you,

2005

I am not sure of the brass if it is a dull(U.S.4) or a bright finish(U.S.3) at any rate,I would suggest to have it replated and then clear powder coated, this will protect the finish for a very long time. Or another suggestion would be to have it e-coated I believe that most of them are, are guaranteed for life these days.
