Metal to rubber vulcanization bonding affected by plating

2005

Is it technically ok , after vulcanization ( Metal + FKM ),to do blackening or Eletroless Nickel plating on the surface of metal?

While plating normally and Acid pickling , Alkaline cleaning are done ,does it affect rubber to metal adhesion strength and does it affect the rubber properties?

SUJA RUBBER INDUSTIRES PVT.LTD - PONDY, INDIA

Hello Mr Manikandan;

Its better to plate first and blast off the area where you are going to bond rubber, or mask off the bonding area and plate and finally mould the part. The rubber causes the part to float and will not bond properly.

One plating cycle will not change the rubber characteristics but repeated exposure to heat may cause bulging of the rubber.
