Platen Press Restoration




I am currently trying to restore an old platen press, to sit outside our museum. While painting it a glossy black seems to be the initial response to such an effort, I want to do something completly different, hopefully using hot or cold patinas. the press is primarily steel with some rubber and wooden pieces. It's heavily rusted in many areas and I'm sure I'll need to clean that off.

I don't want to go too dark with this restoraton process. I want it to look old when finished, but I also want it to be unique, and a lighter color, so all the detail in the piece will stand out. Any suggestions would be great on how to do this.
