Plating Silver onto Stainless Steel

I am attempting to determine the process for plating silver to stainless steel, specifically 410 stainless. In addition, the thickness of the plating needs to be substantially thicker than normal, in the range of .007 to .010 inches thick. If you have any thoughts on this or know the name of a vendor that may be able to accomplish this I would be grateful.

Clean, activate in choice of acid, woods nickel strike, conventional CN silver strike and then silver plate with a high silver content plating solution at a modest amperage with agitation. Technic is one of at least two companies that have a cyanide-free (No Cyanide) strike and plating solution. You will have to talk to the vendor to see how to tweak the process to get that high a thickness.

If the part is cylindrical, Brush plating will work quite well in a flow thru process.

James Watts is correct that brush plating will work for this process, depending on size. We silver plate between .005"-.010" of silver on stainless steel on a regular basis for a major aerospace company. We preplate with nickel use silver strike and build with silver.

Anodic for 2 min and cathodic for 6 min in Woods bath works very well to get good adhesion. I plate bottoms of 304 stainless steel utensils with 0.5 mm thick copper. The utensils are used for cooking on open LPG flame. I have tried the same procedure and after 5 microns copper, switched to silver plating. That also works fine.

I use Asymmetric A.C. for building thick plating.
