Stain or paint for iron bed

I have an iron bed to refinish. I want it to look like pecan or walnut stain. Can I stain or do I have to paint?

I think it will be way too dark to stain, and will quickly rust if not painted or clearcoated. How about paint and then a translucent stain smeared on top of that?
