Coatings For Aerospace Gear Applications

balesmss banner

I am researching gear coatings to extend the life or increase the power density of geartrain applications, specifically aerospace geartrains. Are there any references or case studies that I might use to help with my search?

I think it's a lot more complicated than coatings. You'll need to look at adequacy of design, selection of materials, heat treat, fits, surface finishes, lubricants, operating speeds and loads, temperatures, break-in conditions, and many other variables. Gear engineering stuff.

There was a very good article on this subject in the July-August 2004 issue of Gear Technology (Franz Joachim, et al from ZF, "Influence of Coatings and Surface Improvements on the Lifetime of Gears", pp. 50-56). Another source of good information on this topic is the Mechanical Components Branch of the NASA Glenn Research Center. They have a number of recent publications freely available on their website.

And, It has to be approved by the OEM before you can apply it to operational parts.

There was a workshop held on the subject of surface treatment of gears last year put on by the Gear Research Institute and ASM International's Surface Engineering group.

Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
