Stainless steel 430 rust - after boiling water

I have tested boiling water using a rice cooker where the rice cooker cover was made form stainless steel 430 and found rust on the cover after 10 minutes of boiling.

1) I would like to know if this is a normal condition.

2) Will the stainless steel 430 become rust if use for boiling water.

3) Can I apply salt spray test on the SS430.

Looking forward to your reply.

If it is standard 430 and is hardened and properly passivated it should be fairly resistant to boiling water for quite awhile, but it could eventually fail.

You can run salt spray (ASTM ASTM B117 [affil link] ) on 430 ss. It is somewhat resistant when properly passivated, but will eventually fail.

Hi,

Can you letme know what chemical is suitable used to passivate SUS 430 to prevent rusty happening? And cconcentration 40-55% of sodium hydroxide will make rust on SUS 430? high concentration for 45-50% of nitric acid also will make rust on SUS 430?

Thanks and regards,

Q. Can SS430 sustain -86 °C temperature?
Is it a corrosion resistant in this low operating temperature?

How can we join two SS430 components?
