IMITATION GOLD PLATING

(1999)

DEAR SIRS, I AM LOOKING FOR A GOLD PLATING SISTEM (HIGH QUALITY IMITATION GOLD) FOR SMALL PARTS. THE METAL BASE IS SAE-1045.

MICHEL MERHEJE

(1999)

Dear Michel,

SAE 1045 is 0.43-0.50 carbon steel. AISI Number is C1045.

For a gold color:

Barrel plate 0.00050 to 0.00100 inches of bright nickel, then 10-50 millionths of an inch of brass from a cyanide solution, then lacquer off-line in a basket, then spin dry.

This is a normal plating cycle for small parts, have a few hundred test samples plated by a trusted plating house, and submit these parts to neutral salt spray, cross section, and in service testing to see if the finish will stand up to service conditions.

Regards, Tom
