Disposal of Sodium Nitrite

We have some 10 kgs of Sodium Nitrite. Can someone give us any idea on how to dispose of it?

Dear Farrukh Iqbal,

As you may know that NaNO2 on decomposition produces hazardous nitrous gases.the best way to dispose it off is transfer NaNO2 to container of water , stir to dissolve or suspended and run to waste diluting greatly with running water other wise mix it with wet sand, transfer to container and arrange removal by disposal company. Do not allow the solution to enter drinking water supplies. the other best way is, as NaNO2 is also used as corrosion inhibitor in Navy Boiler where its solution (1200 ppm of nitrite is maintained),or if you have some chilled water system at your site, add NaNO2 in to that chilled water maintained Nitrite residual level in the range of 1000 to 2000 ppm, where it is used in continuous film formation for protection against corrosion or you can use NaNO2 in closed hot recirculating water for that matter with that mentioned strength. I hope I have conveyed.

Take care,

As well can be used 12g/l addition to black oxide coating solution, but if you still insisting for neutralization you can use the following:
CO(NH2)2 + 2NaNO2 + H2SO4 = CO2 + 2N2 + NaSO4 + 3H2O (REF HANDBOOK NEVER TRIED, SO BE CAREFUL).

You can try contacting a food manufacturing company. Sodium nitrite is used to preserve meat and give it the reddish colour you see in Hunter beef
