Some questions about smoked chrome

I was wanting to have some car parts done in a smoked chrome look. How is the process done? Can it be done in different tints? I'm not wanting a real dark look just a slightly tinted chrome look. Will the finish be a durable finish? Is there any place that does it or sells the materials to do it myself?

Thanks alot.

Chrome is a shiny metal, and is the outermost surface on the materials it is applied to, so it cannot be tinted in colors. However, it is possible for the plating to be smokey or even dark black. This is done by the addition of special additives during the plating process.

Yes, the finish is durable; chrome is a very hard metal. You can't do it yourself, but a number of plating shops offer it. Search our Jobshops Directory.
