4145 gas nitrided steel for chroming

I would like to know if a gas nitrided surface would be piece of 4145 steel that is gas nitrided would be a bad parent surface for chroming.

In our experience, nitrided surfaces are more difficult to plate. When subject to acid prep cycles lots of smut is produced and it has to be removed to obtain good adhesion.
