High stress strike nickel

2004

Dear sirs,

In Chrome plating standard for automotive (JIS), for Nickel layer always mention term "Double or triple + high stress strike" and "Double or triple + dispersed strike". Questions :

#1. What are the basic understanding of "Double or triple + high stress strike" and "Double or triple + dispersed strike".

#2. How to make those "Double or triple + high stress strike" and "Double or triple + dispersed strike".

For Chrome layer :
Why chrome layer with microcrack (100crack/cm)is better than normal chrome. Our product cannot pass Corrodkote test because used normal Chrome solution. How to make Chrome layer with 100 crack/cm.

Thank you.

Corrosion-resistant nickel requires at least two layers of nickel, semi-bright and bright; that is what is meant by "double". It is also possible to apply a third "high sulfur" layer for improved corrosion resistance; this is what is meant by "triple".

One of the ways to make the chrome highly porous or micro-cracked is to deposit a layer of very highly stressed microporous nickel before it.

The article "High Quality Copper-Nickel-Chromium Plating on Plastics: A Continuous Process and its Challenges" by J.R. Arnold in the Jan. 2004 issue of Plating and Surface Finishing should answer all your questions.

The referenced article was in Plating & Surface Finishing magazine. Any of your co-workers who is a member of the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society should have it, as it is the monthly journal of that organization. A reprint is presumably available through their website at NASF.
