Properties of 2024 T351

I would like to know what the T351 stands for in 2024 T351. I am doing an independent lab on heat treating aluminum and need to know all of the material properties of the samples I will be using. I am using aluminum 2024 T351.

First of three simultaneous responses --

The T351 is called a temper designation and it indicates the following:

T3 means solution heat treated, cold worked, and naturally aged to a substantially stable condition.

Tx51 (of which T351 is one example) is an additional designation used specifically for plate, rolled or cold-finished bar, die or ring forgings, or rolled rings that have been stress relieved by stretching. Typical values of permanent set after stretching are 1.5-3% for plate, 1-3% for rod, bar, shapes, or extruded tubes, and 0.5-3% for drawn tubes. No further straightening is applied after stretching.

Look up material properties at www.matweb.com

Third of three simultaneous responses --

Matweb is undoubtedly helpful for a lot of things, David, and it gave some properties common to 2024 T4 and 2024 T351, but I spent 10 minutes without actually making progress towards the answer to this question of what T351means. Do you have a particular page or search method you suggest?

2024-T351 Aluminum, is there a loss of temper in the machining process and if so can the part be re-heat treated to T351.

Thanks,

T3 is a solution heat treatment and then cold worked. This applies to items that are cold worked, straightened or flattened to improve strength. The "51" is the stress relief after heat treatment. This is done by stretching the item anywhere from 0.50 to 3 percent it extended length, depending on its shape. Hope this helps.

My name is Bill Montgomery from Little Rock, Ar.
I am interested in finding out if there is a major difference between 2024-T3, T350, T351, T3511. The company I work for is questioning the mat'l if it doesn't match the required callout & before I submit my request for suitable substations I would like to know the difference in the callouts. I have read the previous questions but I'm looking for something to take to engineering.
Thank you.
