Cleaning slate with muriatic acid

I have a slate floor installed in the 1970's that was sealed with some type of finish that is now very yellowed and we have been unable to remove it. The slate is in excellent condition except for this yellowed finish. We have tried many things but nothing works. Would muriatic acid work or some other chemical like this? Again, we are not trying to retain a shiny finish. This is an entry hall area that catches all the slop coming in from outside.

I'm a Tile Setter, Acid will not take off sealer to the best of my knowledge, I would head to the tile store and buy their sealer stripper ... it's worked for me in the past. Be careful as the stripper is hard on skin and anything else it touches.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
