What type of preparation is required to paint or wax over galvanized tin?

What surface preparation is needed to remove oil from galvanized tin? Is there any product or process to remove this oily film? This is duct-work that needs to be painted. Is there any type of paint that is best suited alykd or latex/water-bourne?
