Contractor needs right prep. for lacquered copper fireplace

I am a painting contractor. I have been asked to brighten up a new copper fire place made of sheet copper. The trade before me applied a rudiment to darken. Finish was not accepted. They removed this with scotchbrite which scratched the copper. I am to polish this out and apply lacquer. I am concerned with adhesion after polishing.you response is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your response.

brass lacquer [on eBay or Amazon] is made for copper and brass, so I don't think adhesion will be a problem if the copper is clean after the buffing.
