I panned for gold and need to safely get rid of the mercury

I spent a summer panning for hard rock gold, now I have 5 lbs of mercury with any gold I may have picked up in it. How do I extract the gold safely without losing the mercury into the environment?

I read it some where, to remove extra mercury from gold amalgam is by pressurizing through leather.
