Passivating SS tubes already attached to mild steel plates

2003

What will be the effect of 10-12% HNO3 acid on a 25 mm MS plate. We are planning to passivate SS tubes (fixed to the MS Plate on the top and bottom) using Nitric Acid. Since there is no direct approach, we are planning to circulate the acid for about 30 minutes and then flush using water. The operation would be done at RT. Would this operation affect the MS plate. This operation would be done Twice (Maximum) a year.

Thanking you in anticipation.

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION HERE! Putting MS (mild steel) into HNO3 can cause a violent reaction that will release toxic gases. You do not want to do this unless you are prepared for this with proper ventilation and hazard controls.
