What beats charcoal blocks for silver soldering?

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I have been torch soldering sterling silver on charcoal blocks for years. It is very expensive and doesn't last very long. Does anyone have a suggestion for what's next best that reflects heat like charcoal but lasts longer?

Thanks in advance,

I'm not familiar with soldering silver, but I find your letter interesting. Does the charcoal also serve as an oxygen scavenger during the soldering to discourage oxidation?

Yes, the charcoal block helps to deplete oxygen.
