LEAD INCAPSULATION: Am seeking info on lead incapsulation on small metal boxes. These units were coated in the late 50's and 60's and have chalked to approx. 5% of the original paint mil thickness and is probably only pigment remaining. The chalk rubs off easily with a dry rag and any sanding will expose bare metal. Abrasive or co2 blasting is not possible because of local air quality control restrictions and sanding is too costly in hazardous waste disposal expense. I am considering using a waterbourne polyurethane-acrylate coating in a 1.5 to 2 mil thickness without a primer interface. The VOC content is within EPA regulations and Cali. Air Quality Control Board parameters. Would like your input to the success of this application and any similar "lead containment" operations you may have performed.Pete

My Co. has been doing paint removal for many years. If these boxes can be move then you can have them chemically stripped. Then you can repaint them with whatever you want to, and you do not have to worry about lead in the future.
