Looking for: red-gloss high heat enamel paint

Q. I am trying to locate a top-quality high heat stove paint, to paint one of my antique wood stoves. I have found the Tremclad enamel brush-on (which I prefer to the spray), but it only comes in black. I have found another brand that comes in light-grey, white & black...all gloss, in a spray. I am looking for RED gloss, and can't seem to find it. Any help? Thanks.

A. I don't think you'll find high temp gloss enamel quite as nice as you see on a store-bought stove, Maria, because that's not actually paint. The high gloss and temperature resistance of such ceramic coatings isn't from painting but from melting a glass-like ceramic frit onto the surface at impossibly high temperatures available only in a factory. But you can get red stove paint such as Stovebright Mojave Red paint [affil links] or an auto paint like high temperature paint [affil links].

If it's not shiny enough, it's reportedly possible to add a high temperature clear coat after it. Good luck.

Q. Where did you find the black brush on paint? I have been trying to find it for our bar-b-q pit. I need approx. 2 gals.

A. Two gallons, Twyla? Are you cooking up a woolly mammoth in that colossal bar-b-q pit :-)

You can try stove paint [on eBay or Amazon] if interested. Good luck.
