TREATMENT OF RAW STEEL FOR INTERIORS

Q. I am looking for a clear coating for use on raw steel for use on handrails and other interior finishes. The coating should prevent rust and last many years between coats, information on both a low sheen finish and high sheen finish. Do you know of any products that fit this description?

A. I think you would be pleased with DAU-75 made by PPG. I've been using it for quite some time now on my steel furniture and it looks great, and is very durable.

It's a little expensive, but I think it is worth it in the long run. Little prep work is needed, and there is no wet sanding required after spraying.

Q. A client of mine has purchased raw sheet steel formed for use as countertops in a retail business. He has asked me to install them and I suggested a thorough cleaning and treatment prior to the installation. The thread suggested using PPG DAU-75 as a clear coating method but I was unable to find it on their web page. Please advise. Thank you

A. Hi Don. Per a very believable forum response by Tamco Paint at www.autobody101.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22614

Actually the PPG DAU 75, was a 21% by volume clear PPG used to make. It's actually for PPG standards a very very low solids clear. It was a 16:1 mix ratio with the DXR80 hardener, and really designed to go over their DDL (PPG lacquer) and DAR (PPG Enamel). It could also go over DBC and DBU or DCC. Most clears that are true urethane based clears do not do well going over old school lacquer DDL line. This clear did, because no matter what they say, this one clear here was a enamel based clear, or really a blend of enamel and urethane, many reasons some manufactures do that.

I cannot think of a newer gen clear from anyone that meets these specs of this clear. This solids is so low, it's like water. PPG is known for really good, long lasting Acrylic Urethane clears, like I make. I would find a clear that is around 38-42% solids. Sprays user friendly, great UV etc.
