Soldering MuMetal

Q. Does anyone have in writing or know of any website, stating that MuMetal is solderable. If so, please could they let me know. Many thanks.

A. I'm not quite sure that I understand the question. First, are you confusing soldering with welding? If not, I'm not sure I can help you. However, if you are, it is possible to weld MuMetal, as long as the material is re-normalized to its previous state to optimize the shielding properties. A good website to check out is: http://www.magnetic-shield.com/faq/pma.html

A. Hi:

I have soldered mumetal using ordinary electronic rosin core solder. It flows easily. I used spot tacking, not a lot of solder. Since solder melts a temperatures way below the annealing temperature of mumetal (just over 2000 F) I think it will not require another anneal operation.

If you spot or TIG weld then a heat treat operation at 2,000 plus degrees in a hydrogen atmosphere will be needed.

Have Fun,

Q. Are you saying that mumetal comes in the form of a soldering stick... or are you saying that you just melted it with high heat?

A. Hi Levi. I don't understand your question either, so we're all even. To which of the 3 previous posters is your question addressed?
