Does powdercoat affect thermal conductivity?

Does polyester powdercoating affect the thermal conductivity of a die-cast aluminum heat sink?

John Jamael

Absolutely. It will somewhat depend on what kind of powdercoat is applied, but the bigger determining factor will be how thick the coating is. The Polyester material you described is a plastic, so it will have some insulating properties. Consider that the thermal conductivity for Al is 2.37 W/(cm*K) while the thermal conductivity of polyester is .009 W/(cm*K).

Can you please tell me - Is the thermal conductivity of Polyester 0.009 or 0.0009.

Do you have an actual figure for the Thermal Conductivity of polyester powder coating ? (i.e., used to coat aluminium extrusions).

Do you perform such coatings to aluminium extrusions.

We need the above info to pass on to our USA contacts who will then contact you

Many thanks in advance.

My application is an epoxy powder coating on an extruded aluminum heat sink. How will epoxy powdercoating affect the thermal conductivity?

Amy Grumet-Avallone

I have an outside applied design requiring heatshrinking. I need to know how much the thermal effect of 60u" thick powdercoating will have vs raw aluminium.
Thanks very much.
