Get the Enamel Paint off of Brass

2003

HELP!
I am restoring an old iron bed. There are seven Brass finials on the head board and foot board. After polishing, etc. I went to the store and the lady told me to go ahead and use a "Rustoleum Clear Gloss Enamel" on the brass to prevent them from re-tarnishing. The can states that it is for metal and prevents tarnishing amongst other things.
Fortunately, I only did the foot board. I don't like it; it took the "rich" color of the brass away.
How do I remove the clear enamel without ruining the brass ?

I have worked so hard. I don't want to get down to the steel.
What do you recommend sealing brass with?

Hello,

The clear coat can be removed with lacquer thinner [on eBay or Amazon] or acetone [on eBay or Amazon].
Please note these are extremely flammable and proper precautions need to be observed when handling these types of products.

You will likely need to repolish the brass after stripping the clear coat.
Like they say, you get what you pay for.

If you don't like what the Rustoleum does, try a better lacquer.
