Nickel chrome plating is rusting in LCD areas

2003

ADVISE NEEDED. I AM DOING NICKEL/CHROME PLATING ON HB & STAINLESS STEEL (201)GRADE. THE ITEM IS SPOT WELDED AT VARIOUS PLACES. CALLED L.C.D. AREAS.
THE CHROME PLATED PRODUCT GETS RUSTED AT L.C.D.AREAS.

PLEASE SOLVE MY PROBLEM BY ADVISE WHICH CHEMICAL OR PROTECTIVE COATING I SHOULD USE. WITHOUT LOOSING THE SHINE.

THANK YOU

Mr. Arora,

This may help .

1) Ensure the spot welds are MIG welds. These look shiny and do not entrap solution. Parts should be plated as quickly as possible after fabrication.
2) Clean and pickle very thoroughly .100 % inspection pre plate for rust and dirt in LCD. Do not over pickle.
3) Apply a woods nickel strike for 3 to 4 microns first.
4) after re activating . in sulfuric 10% solution, rinse in DI water.
5) Plate Nickel to 20 microns.
6) Plate chrome to 0.25 microns The Nickel plating solution must have an analysis of NiSO4 220 -250 gpl NiCl2 55-65 gpl H3BO3 45 - 50 gpl The operating conditions. pH 4.4 4.7 air agitation vigorous Filtration. continuous. Temp 55 Centigrade. It is understood the solution is clean, iron , copper , zinc, and organic impurity free.

Dear Mr Arora,

After doing all that Mr Nurie suggested, you might want to take a look at extending the throw in your chrome bath to cover all LCD areas.

Work works.
