Putting an interesting finish on sheet metal

I have purchased 2 decorative sheet metal containers for me home. They will hold dried grasses as decoration. I would like to put an interesting finish on the metal...oxidize or etch. What would I use, and how would I do it?

The easiest would be an antiquing type paint. If you really want to etch or oxidize the metal, the first step is to find out what the metal is.
