-----Advise on powder coating wood (for School Project)
1998
I am a team member of a graduate group working on a business plan for Powder Coating on Wood. We are looking for success stories and failures to support our plan. We are also interested in the process. Does the wood have to be preheated, has anyone done any wood other than medium density fiberboard?
The catalyst for this project was a blurb on the front page of the Wall Street Journal stating that Morton had a new powder for wood. Do any of the other powder manufacturers offer a similar product.
Any comments are appreciated.

Yes, our process demands we preheat the MDF to 250 degrees. Herbert O'Brien and Tiger Drylac have engineered low temperature wood powders for wood. Good luck with your project.

Tons of work have been conducted in the last three to five years. A number of independent labs have toyed with this concept throughout the world.

We have had several trials with MDF Board or Supawood as we call it in South Africa. At this stage I am in the process in manufacturing a complete plant for the sole purpose for experimenting a production unit in-house.
Any assistance by means of technical specs would be appreciated. Reciprocal information will be made in return.

Numerous inroads have been made in coating MDF. A preheat is generally required with the product temperature in the range of 200-250 degrees F at application. The post cure can be achieved with gas convection, infrared, or UV curing depending on the specific formulation.

Yes reheat is one process used.
Powder coating on wood and MDF is in the state with approx. 10 installation using 2 types of powder. Lab and testing work being done in NJ and others across there country. All the major companies have and are developing new powders daily for MDF, Solid and Plywood with great results.
The interesting industries to date are Display, Office Equipment, RTA and Kitchen.
