Cleaning of hard metal substrates before PVD coating
WC inserts are frequently coated by PVD. Some of the PVD suppliers claim it is necessary to sandblast the WC inserts before coating in order to remove the remaining Co of the surface of the insert. Some other suppliers are proud to do no mechanical pretreatment on their carbide inserts. What is the best solution ? If a Co removal is necessary, could it be done by chemical way instead of sandblasting ?

I would not recommend sand blasting of carbide. If they need to do it to get their coating to adhere, they must be doing something wrong, either in how they clean the tools or how they coat them.
