How do I apply a color on stainless steel.

I am looking for a method to color small parts made of 300 series stainless steel. The coating needs to be very thin, no more then .0001" in thickness. I have heard of a method using thin film interference patterns to create various colors but I do not know the method of application. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
