Electroplating Options Vis a Vis Hot Dip Process

2003

Hello,

I'm a project officer and presently working on a steel project. The scope of my work is related to introducing electroplating line to an existing Cold Roll mill. Traditionally not being from Steel Industry, I have certain queries.

1. Can I make galvannealed sheet using electroplating technique.
2.Can I make terne coated sheet using electroplating technique.
3.How well electroplating line compares to hot dip process in terms of economics, quality and product portfolio.

I know this is rather long query, I would really appreciate I am assisted in it.

Regards,

Hello,

This is my second query, I am keen to know whether an electroplating plant for Zn/Ni coating of CR sheets is capable of producing terne coated, galvannealed sheets, of course all of them has to be electrolytically done.

I'm involved in a project that requires setting up of an electroplating plant and I need to understand the full capability of the proposed plant. I would appreciate if I'm assisted on it. Wasif Ali

Hi, Wasif.

The general rule is that electroplating is more economical and more practical for low thicknesses and hot-dip processes are more economical and more practical for high thicknesses. You would need to specify the required thickness before people could advise the economy and practicality for your particular situation. You may want to consult the article "Zinc Iron Electroplating on Strip Steel" by Adaniya T; Hara T; Sagiyama M; Watanabe T printed in the August 1985 issue of Plating & Surface Finishing as it compares zinc-iron electroplating to galvannealing. Good luck.
