PICKLING PROBLEM FOR BRASS SHEETS

2003

Sir,

I am facing difficulty in pickling brass sheets up to the expectation of our customers. The sheets after sulfuric acid pickling are somewhat reddish & blackish also (specially for brass sheets containing impurities like lead, tin, aluminium etc.) I do not want to use nitric acid due to its fuming nature. Which chemical should I use to avoid water stains on the sheets?

Please suggest.

You probably need an oxidizing agent; sulfuric acid won't do that. A mix of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide may solve your problem without requiring the use of nitric acid. This mixture is available as a proprietary which includes stabilizers to keep the hydrogen peroxide from spontaneously degenerating.
