Hammertone Paint for a Hobbyist

Q. Hello;

I restore old motion picture cameras. I would like to find out how to make HAMMERTONE GREY Paint. Nobody sells it on this Island. There is no way I can buy it through the mail, it is illegal to ship flammables thru the post office. Is there any way I can do it mixing regular paints.

Where do I find the answers? I posted a question and I am looking for the place for the answers, and I cannot find it.

Thanks!

Hi Andre. I visited your beautiful island and bioluminescent bay not long ago. Sorry for the misunderstanding but this is a public forum where readers answer the questions they can, if and when they wish. Hopefully, someone knowledgeable and helpful will wander by soon; meanwhile see if you can help another reader out. Thanks :-)

A. Paint first with an enamel. Let it dry but not harden enough that it can be sanded. Apply a coat of lacquer, either the same color or clear. Practice this method on some scraps first, it works but you can end up with some strange results. If you can find a store that sells paint by Krylon [Adv: Krylon Premium Spray Paint Sterling Silver [affil links]] or by Rustoleum [Adv: Rustoleum Hammered Metal [affil links] ], maybe have them special order some Hammertone paint.

A. You can get Hammerite [affil links] hammertone paint. Good luck. I have a couple of the old Keystone cameras and a projector in brown hammertone. They are beautiful.

A. A spray painter friend of mine says you can get a similar effect with a silicon additive in normal enamel paint. You could try ArmorAll [on eBay or Amazon] or similar automotive plastic protection product, they contain liquid silicon but we're not sure if it's water based - can't use that in paint!. Alternatively you could experiment with silicon oil, available from your car dealer spare parts, for instance the cooling fan on my Toyota Hilux uses it and it's readily available.

A. On the TV show "Ricks Restorations" he mentions that Hammertone paint is gloss paint mixed with turpentine [on eBay or Amazon] or paint thinner. Causes the finish to crackle, like it was hit with a hammer.
