NICKEL-FREE PLATING FORMULA?

DEAR SRS,

I AM LOOKING FOR A NICKEL FREE SOLUTION FORMULA. THE GOALS ARE A RHODIUM LOOK FINISH (AS WHITE AS POSSIBLE ) , AND ALSO A SUBSTITUTE FOR NICKEL WHEN GOLD PLATING IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO FOLLOW MANDATORY CONDITIONS OF USA AND EUROPE MARKET WHEN PLATING COSTUME JEWELR .

NOWADAYS IN BRAZIL , THIS IS A NEW TENDENCY AND THEREFORE IS A VERY EXPENSIVE AND DANGEROUS WAY ( IN THE SENSE OF SPENDING MONEY FOR NOTHING ) , BUYING IT FROM ANY CHEMICAL COMPANY . ALSO , I AM LOOKING FOR ANY FORMULATIONS OF LAKES , OR VARNISH( ELECTROPLATING OR ELECTRIC-COAGULATED ) TO PROTECT GOLD PLATING FROM OXIDATION , AND FROM FRICTION .

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION ,

BEST REGARDS,

Many decades ago, we had a dilemma in the nickel plating industry. Nickel mines were on strike in various countries, and nickel was on allocation here in the U.S.A.

It was common practice then, to suggest substituting Cobalt sulphate for Nickel sulphate in plating baths. The result was an observed blue-white deposit, rather than nickel which yellows with age.

Not much is written about this, but at the time, we were scrambling for an answer to the nickel shortage. The coloration may be proven in your lab, in either a beaker [beakers on eBay or Amazon] or a Hull Cell.
