PVD technology in bathroom fixtures

I wanted to know, if PVD technology can be used for putting a thin transparent layer on electro plated or painted surface of bathroom fittings and fixtures to protect the surface from day to day scratches, etc.

PVD coatings are used instead of clear finishes and paints. The surface is first coated with electroless nickel, for fill and corrosion protection. This may or may not be followed by a thin hexavalent chrome plate. The PVD coating goes on last. It wears very well, even though it is quite thin, though this has a lot to do with the plating layers. The most common coating is ZrN. By varying the N content, the color can be varied from brush nickel to gold and even brass.

Besides this ZrN PVD layers over Ni-Cr electroplated brass, you may also think as using conventional polished brass using not a varnish layer (then you will have VOC problems!) but also a fully PVD anti-scratch, protective transparent layer. It should work. We have started a R&D project on this problem.

Hi, Gaurav. I think that you will find PVD to be totally prohibitive for one railing, and that your options are to paint it or replace it.
