Fishing vessels built in Spain/ S/S corrosion

2002

We have recently built a scallop fishing vessel in Spain, the factory is sheeted in 304 stainless steel.

After only a few days fishing we have noted that the surface of the s/s panels is becoming rusty, as if it is normal carbon steel.

This is a big problem, what can you suggest? We need help!

Get a local cleaning contractor to come in there with a baking soda blasting machine and the right media and you can derust and passivate that 304 in short order. Contact me if you want details on the process.

Are the panels welded together? If so, the stainless quality of the 304 may be compromised in the heat affected zones near any welded seams. When welding stainless steel structures that cannot be later heat treated (solutionized)you may consider using low carbon stainless alternatives (like 304L.).

I hope this helps.
