citric acid ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] has been used to activate alloy 42. (usually followed by a nickel strikeNickel strike solution would attack aluminum, therefor cannot be used. citric acid will attack aluminum very slowly and may be suitable. Worth a try. There are proprietary citric acid activators for alloy 42 containing a small amount of a antifungal material. Try citric acid at 860 g/L and a temperature of 49 °C.
