Solid Brass Refinishing

2002

I recently bought a solid brass antique bedframe. It is is rough shape, and is oxidized, has some dark spots, and what looks like a little rust. I purchased it from a relative and she said that this was the shape she bought it in, and it cleaned up well (which I saw afterwards). However, it has been in a basement for over a year. I tried to Brasso ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] the bed and some oxidation came off. However, the black spots and rust did not. I was wondering if #0000 steel wool ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] would harm the finish, or if there is another product I can use.

Also, is there any professional refinishers or any companies that can do something that would be easier and safer for the finish?

Thank you!

I am in the same situation as Tara, letter 15275. She wrote inquiring about Solid Brass Refinishing. I have been able to clean up my bedframe of most of the dark spots, rust and oxidation. I have been unable to find a company that will apply a clear coat to preserve the finish. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Ed. note: One of the largest lacquer suppliers is G.J. Nikolas [a finishing.com supporting advertiser]. I think they will tell you of shops which apply their products in your area.
