Removing corrosion from brass

I purchased a brass floor lamp at a garage sale. It is a good quality lamp, however the brass base is severely corroded. It there any home remedy for this?

Go to the hardware store and buy a brass polish (Brasso ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] ?).
