Corrosion encrusted U.S. pennies

I have just found several hundred U.S. pennies which are heavily encrusted with some type of corrosion. Any suggestion concerning a method of removing the encrustation will be appreciated.

First of all check out what the pennies are made from. Are they the more recent sandwhich type or copper? Also there was some zinc back in 1941. Normally heavy corrosion needs mechanical efforts to remove oxidation plus; however, if you are dealing with the sandwhich type, the coating will not hold up to mechanical abrasion for very long because you are removing the plating. Normally I use a small vibratory mill (tumbler) with treated dry organic media.
